Working Groups

Working groups have been formed to develop solutions to industry-wide health and safety issues. The working groups in progress are noted below. Once a working group has completed their task the outcomes from the group are published as guidelines.

Industry Induction

Induction is a critical element of ensuring people entering our sites are equipped to make good decisions to keep themselves and those around them safe. A common industry induction, providing core information in a clear, consistent fashion, will give us the best chance of good decisions being made.

Scope

To create a StayLive industry induction that can be used across the New Zealand electricity sector to provide:

  • Essential knowledge about the electricity sector in New Zealand
    • provide the context to the industry and
    • additional learning/induction requirements
  • Information about common safety processes and requirements across the sector - incl. WA/AP
  • Awareness of critical industry risks/common hazards
  • A single industry induction that avoids repetition
  • Assessment to ensure understanding/comprehension
  • Awareness of
    • requirements to report incidents
    • typical PPE signage/requirements
    • common public safety signage
    • sign-in procedures/hazard boards
    • pre-arrival expectation - D&A, fatigue
    • restricted areas
    • evacuation procedure awareness - covered in depth in site-specific induction

Not in Scope

  • Provide EAC to specific sites
  • Work Authority/Access Permit competency

Latest News

Following confirmation of team membership (below) and the project scope, team members are currently sharing individual company induction content across the group. The goal is to identify common content elements as a guide to content that should be in an industry induction.

The working group is holding a one-day workshop on 27 September to agree the content requirements and map out potential design and implementation.

The Team

Chair: Greg McBain (Genesis)

Team: Peter Mackie (Todd/Nova Energy), Jane Cummings (Contact), Adam Whitmore (Genesis), Chris Savage (Mercury), Justin Lloyd (MB Century), Steve Herbst (Meridian), Cam Childerhouse (Manawa), Kerri Watson (Manawa)

The Opportunity

StayLive companies currently have a variety of induction modules, often with very similar content and learning outcomes. There is an opportunity to extract common induction requirements for the industry into a single module.

Outcomes and Benefits

The key outcome is an industry-wide induction module that provides essential, common knowledge to employees and contractors. Individual asset owners will continue to have their own site-specific inductions and may have additional site entry requirements.

Benefits

  • A layered approach to induction, with the right content delivered at the right time in the right way.
  • Reduced duplication of effort (especially for contractors); multiple, similar modules replaced by one single module.
  • Provide a cohesive introduction to the industry
  • Ensure safety-critical information is provided in the most effective, efficient manner
