Purpose
This document provides guidance on assessment methods for the condition of overhead conductors commonly used for overhead transmission and distribution lines in New Zealand with a primary objective of providing information for renewal decisions.
It is intended to support:
- Determining when conductors are at end of life and should be repaired or replaced.
- Estimating remaining life for forecasting future replacement requirements.
- Providing a consistent condition grading scale for use by the electricity distribution sector.
Scope
This guide discusses assessment methods for conductors commonly used for overhead transmission and distribution lines in New Zealand with a primary objective of providing information for renewal decisions. The guide does not consider conductor attachment hardware, splices and connectors which may in general be addressed by repair.
Due to the many and varied types of conductors that have historically been used in New Zealand, the guide focusses only on those types with a significant installed base. For this reason, the guide does not currently cover aerial bundled conductor and other specialised or uncommon types.
