Peter Browne

Peter is a professional engineer and self-employed engineering consultant and has been a member and involved with the EEA for over four decades. His technical knowledge and understanding of electricity supply industry legislation and regulation is second to none. The knowledge, experience and support Peter has given to EEA in these areas means we are able to provide high quality outcomes for industry and effectively engage with government and regulators on your behalf.

Peter graduated with a BE (Elect) from the University of New Zealand (Canterbury University College) in 1962. His 52 year career has been in the NZ electricity supply industry in various engineering, management and consultancy roles including City Electrical Engineer, Tauranga, Deputy General Manager (Chief Engineer) at the Wellington MED, Pricing Manager of Electricorp Marketing (where he managed the building of the Brooklyn wind turbine generator (a well known Wellington landmark) and manager of Transpowers Graduate Engineer Training Programme for seven years.

Since retiring, he has been a director of The Lines Company for 10 years and served on the Board of the NZ Wind Energy Association for seven years.

Peter has been active in engineering institutions including serving as a Trustee of the IPENZ Foundation, chair of the Wellington Branch of IPENZ and in more recent years chair of the Wellington Branch of the IET.

Peter is the current chair of the Electricity Supply Electrical Co-ordination Committee at Standards NZ, a member of the New Zealand Electrical Standards Committee and the NZ National Committee of the IEC. In the last couple of years, he chaired a committee established by Standards NZ to investigate alternatives to the MEN low voltage supply earthing system and recently produced a Technical Report on the TT system as an alternative to MEN.

Throughout his career, Peter has retained a strong interest in legislation, codes and Standards affecting the industry - particularly in respect to safety related regulations - and has contributed to countless EEA reports, workshops and submissions. For the EEA he has been an analyst, writer, presenter, advisor and mentor on all of these matters and prepared numerous drafts and revision of EEA Guides and publications. He was a project manager for the review of The Line Mechanics Handbook, now expanded to The Line Mechanics and Cable Jointers Handbook and most recently he has served on the Standards committee that produced the updated standard for Public Safety Management Systems.
